Turning off its filtering capabilities for a particular website is as effortless as clicking the blue button from the drop-down UI. For starters, it is capable of running right out-of-the-box, without you even having to restart Chrome after its installation. Strikes a sublime balance between user accessibility, performance and resource consumptionĪs it happens, uBlock Origin ticks all of the boxes with valiance. However, as a mundane user, what you might care about is related to aspects such as ease of use, performance, and resource consumption. While this might sound appealing to advanced users or ubergeeks, if you're a mainstream user, then you surely do not care too much about such under-the-hood wizardry. Better yet, you can add custom, third party filter by quickly visiting the designated section from the Settings page. It's backed up by a couple of very powerful filters, such as EasyList, Peter Lowe's Ad server list, EasyPrivacy and Malware Domains list.

Enforced by some of the most powerful ad-blocking filters To the rescue comes uBlock Origin, a highly customizable and powerful Chrome extension (also available for Firefox and Opera) that takes its mission to block third party ads, trackers and other possibly malware-related content extremely seriously. It's no wonder, especially since most ads actually slow down the website loading process, not to mention that they make the layout of various webpages feel uninviting due to tons of clutter.

I'm far more annoyed by paying for cable TV (or streaming services) and still getting ads. While we agree that not all Internet ads are "evil," if given the chance, most of us would surely be better off without them. In any event, paying for a product with ads has always been part of the print media/news business.

If you look at old free print papers (like the Village Voice), the volume of ads is enormous compared to something like the Times. Granted, if you want both digital and daily home delivery now, it's $40/mo. It's $17/mo now for the digital-only version. In fact, way back in 1990, the New York Times cost $5/week for home delivery. That adds up to more than the current monthly fees for the online versions. About 30 years ago, when physical newspapers were still more popular than virtual newspapers, you'd pay about 50 cents for the daily edition and $1.50 for the Sunday edition. This annoys me too, because I dislike ads, but to be fair, newspapers and magazines have always had ads as their primary revenue source, and also almost always charged for the print copy as well. I will NEVER buy the products that they are advertising even if it did fit my personality or needs. As it stands, I get bombarded with so much unwanted things that I actively hate the things they spew at me. If they were better at their job I wouldn't even know they existed. The Ad companies are really doing this to themselves. So, I'm forced into blocking everything I can, whenever and wherever I can.

Yet, YouTube is chock full of Truck, Beer, and Football commercials I guess just because I'm a middle aged man and that's what "we" like. I was really hopeful that Google, with all of their knowledge about me (and they have a TON of it!) would be able to target advertisements that I might like. The same truck commercial 100 times? Nope. Most of the things shoved into my face are something that I would NEVER purchase or recommend to others. The problem is that I (almost) never get these ads. A valentines idea for my wife? Yes, please!

A new keyboard or update for my car? Yes, please. However, there are some things that I want to be told about or update on. I use Ublock Origin (and others) everywhere I can and it's great.

You know, I don't mind advertisements that are really targeted and would enrich my life in some way.
